Bupropion is an antidepressant used to treat a variety of conditions, including depression, other mental/mood disorders, and smoking cessation. Antidepressants can help prevent suicidal thoughts/attempts and provide other important benefits. However, studies have shown that a small number of people who take antidepressants for any condition may experience new or worsening depression, other mental/mood symptoms, or suicidal thoughts/attempts. Therefore, it is very important to talk with the doctor about the risks and benefits of antidepressant medication, even if treatment is not for a mental/mood condition.

Wellbutrin® ( bupropion hydrochloride) is a prescription medication used to treat depression (also known as major depression or clinical depression).

The drug comes in tablet form. It is taken by mouth, usually two to four times a day. Wellbutrin tablets are available in two strengths:

Wellbutrin 75 mg
Wellbutrin 150 mg.

Wellbutrin is part of a group of medications called norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitors, or NDRIs for short. NDRIs affect specific chemicals within the brain, known as norepinephrine and dopamine. When the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine become unbalanced, it can cause a variety of conditions, including depression and seasonal affective disorder. Wellbutrin helps block the reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine so that more remains in the space between the brain's nerve cells.

Tell the doctor immediately if you notice new or worsening depression/other psychiatric conditions, unusual behavior changes (including possible suicidal thoughts/attempts), or other mental/mood changes (including new/worsening anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, irritability, hostile/angry feelings, impulsive actions, severe restlessness, very rapid speech). Be especially watchful for these symptoms when a new antidepressant is started or when the dose is changed. If you are using bupropion to quit smoking, stop taking bupropion and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the symptoms listed above or if you have any of these symptoms after stopping treatment.

Do not take Wellbutrin if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as furazolidone (Furoxone), isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect), selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam, Zelapar), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) in the last 14 days. You should not take Wellbutrin if you have seizures, an eating disorder, if you are using a second form of bupropion, or if you have suddenly stopped using alcohol or sedatives.

Wellbutrin may cause seizures, especially in people with certain medical conditions or when using certain drugs. Tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions and the drugs you use.

You may have thoughts about suicide when you first start taking an antidepressant such as Wellbutrin, especially if you are younger than 24 years old. Your doctor will need to check you at regular visits for at least the first 12 weeks of treatment.

Report any new or worsening symptoms to your doctor, such as: mood or behavior changes, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, or if you feel impulsive, irritable, agitated, hostile, aggressive, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), more depressed, or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Wellbutrin. It may increase your risk of seizures.

WELLBUTRIN XL® is not for everyone. There is a chance of having a seizure (convulsion, t) with WELLBUTRIN XL®, especially in people with certain medical problems or who take certain medicines. The risk of having seizures increases with higher doses of WELLBUTRIN XL®. Tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions, especially if you have liver or kidney problems, and all the medicines you take. Do not take any other medicines while you are using WELLBUTRIN XL® unless your doctor has said it is okay to take them. If you have a seizure while taking WELLBUTRIN XL®, stop taking the tablets and call your doctor right away.

Do not take WELLBUTRIN XL® again if you have a seizure.
Do not take with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), or medicines that contain bupropion like ZYBAN®*, which is used to help patients stop smoking. Some people get high blood pressure that can be severe while taking WELLBUTRIN XL®. The risk for high blood pressure may be increased if you also use nicotine replacement therapy (such as a nicotine patch) to help you stop smoking.

Who should not take WELLBUTRIN XL®:
Do not take WELLBUTRIN XL® if you:

Have or had a seizure disorder or epilepsy
Are taking ZYBAN® (used to help people stop smoking) or any other medicines that contain bupropion hydrochloride, such as WELLBUTRIN® Tablets or WELLBUTRIN SR® Sustained-Release Tablets. Bupropion is the same active ingredient that is in WELLBUTRIN XL® • Drink a lot of alcohol and abruptly stop drinking, or use medicines called sedatives (these make you sleepy) or benzodiazepines and you stop using them all of a sudden
Have taken within the last 14 days medicine for depression called a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), such as NARDIL®* (phenelzine sulfate), PARNATE® (tranylcypromine sulfate), or MARPLAN® (isocarboxazid)
Have or had an eating disorder such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia
Are allergic to the active ingredient in WELLBUTRIN XL®, bupropion, or to any of the inactive ingredients

Possible side effects of WELLBUTRIN XL®:

The most common adverse reactions reported with WELLBUTRIN XL® are weight loss, dry mouth, nausea, difculty sleeping, dizziness, and sore throat. Other common side effects include loss of appetite, skin rash, sweating, ringing in the ears, shakiness, stomach pain, agitation, anxiety, muscle pain, fast heartbeat, and more frequent urination.
