Vaniqa (Eflornithine) Interactions
No known drug interactions have been reported with eflornithine cream. It is not known if topical eflornithine has any interaction with other topically applied drug products.
Systemically-administered eflornithine in combination with alpha interferons for the treatment of metastatic melanoma has resulted in hearing loss at multiple frequencies. However, hearing loss has been associated with the use of systemic eflornithine alone. Hearing loss may be more pronounced in patients who already have hearing impairment. The health care provider might consider serial audiograms if eflornithine is used alone or in combination with alpha interferons.
Systemic eflornithine causes leukopenia in about 27% of patients. Administration of live virus vaccines in immunocompromised patients may lead to severe or fatal infections. Live vaccines, (e.g., oral polio, OPV; rotavirus; varicella; and MMR vaccines) should be avoided in patients receiving systemic eflornithine.
Patients in an immunocompromised state, such as those receiving antineoplastic agents or immunosuppressives, may not have an optimal response to systemic eflornithine therapy. A functional immune system is required to kill the growth-arrested trypanosomes. The clinician may want to more closely monitor immunocompromised patients receiving eflornithine. Cerebral spinal fluid examinations (via lumbar puncture) are often implemented to identify remaining trypanosomes or relapses.
