Tramadol Administration
Tramadol Administration
Oral Administration
- Tramadol is administered with or without food.
- Slow titration of tramadol to the effective analgesic dose (i.e., increase by 50 mg PO every 3 days) may decrease the incidence of nausea and vomiting.
Parenteral Administration † (not available in the US)
- Tramadol may be given intravenously, subcutaneously, or epidurally.
- Intravenous tramadol 50 - 150 mg provides similar analgesia as 5 - 15 mg of morphine IV. When given epidurally, tramadol is 1/30 as potent as morphine.
- Tramadol has been given as an IV bolus over 1 minute (100 mg diluted in 2 ml NS).
Rectal Administration † (not available in the US)
- Instruct patient on proper use of suppository.
- Moisten the suppository with water prior to insertion. If suppository is too soft because of storage in a warm place, chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes or run cold water over it before removing the wrapper.
† non-FDA approved
