Tenuate (Diethylpropion) Indications...Dosage
For the treatment of obesity as a short-term adjunct in a regimen of caloric restriction in patients with an initial body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m2 or greater and who have not responded to a weight-reducing regimen of diet and exercise alone:
Oral dosage (immediate-release tablets):
Adults: The recommended dose is 25 mg PO three times per day, taken one hour before meals. A 25 mg tablet may also be administered in the mid-evening if desired to overcome night-time hunger.
Oral dosage (sustained-release tablets):
Adults: The recommended dose is 75 mg PO administered once daily in mid-morning.
Adolescents and children: Safe and effective use has not been established.
Maximum Dosage Limits:
- Adults: 75 mg/day PO.
- Elderly: Safe and effective use has not been established.
- Adolescents: Safe and effective use has not been established.
- Children: Safe and effective use has not been established.
Patients with hepatic impairment:
The effects of hepatic impairment on the pharmacokinetics and clinical activity of diethylpropion metabolites is unknown; use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment.
Patients with renal impairment:
Diethylpropion is substantially excreted by the kidney, and the risk of toxic reactions may be greater in patients with impaired renal function; however, specific dosage recommendations are not available.
