Tamiflu (Oseltamivir) Adverse Reactions
The most frequent adverse effect associated with Tamiflu (Oseltamivir) is nausea/vomiting (9.9%/9.4%). In pediatric studies, vomiting (15%) was the most common side effect. These events are generally mild to moderate and usually occur during the first 2 days of treatment. Other adverse reactions reported more frequently in adult patients taking Tamiflu (Oseltamivir) as compared to placebo include bronchitis (2.3%), insomnia (1.1%), and vertigo (1%). Other adverse reactions that reported in >= 1% of adult patients included diarrhea (6.6%), abdominal pain (2.2%), dizziness (2.1%), headache (1.8%), cough (1.2%), and fatigue (1%); however, these did not occur more frequently than in placebo-treated patients. In pediatric patients, other adverse reactions occurring at a higher frequency than placebo during Tamiflu (Oseltamivir) therapy include diarrhea (9.5%), abdominal pain (4.7%), epistaxis (3.1%), and conjunctivitis (1%). These events usually occurred once and resolved despite continued dosing. The following adverse events occurred in > 1% of pediatric patients, but not at a rate greater than placebo: otitis media (8.7%), asthma (3.5%), nausea (3.3%), sinusitis (1.7%), bronchitis (1.6%), dermatitis (1%), lymphadenopathy (1%), tympanic membrane disorder (1%).
Adverse reactions observed during clinical practice with Tamiflu (Oseltamivir) include aggravation of diabetes mellitus (hyperglycemia), cardiac arrhythmia, confusion, elevated hepatic enzymes, hepatitis, rash (unspecified), seizures, swelling of face or tongue (laryngeal edema) and toxic epidermal necrolysis. Because these reactions are reported voluntarily, it is impossible to reliably estimate the frequency or establish a causal relationship to Tamiflu (Oseltamivir).
Additional side effects reported in < 1% of patients treated with Tamiflu (Oseltamivir) included unstable angina, anemia, pseudomembranous colitis, fracture of the humerus, pneumonia, pyrexia, and peritonsilar abscess. However, causality has not been determined.
