    Mebendazole (Vermox) Interactions

Mebendazole is metabolized by hepatic cytochrome P450 enzymes and other enzymes. The specific enzymes involved in mebendazole metabolism have not been identified. Cimetidine reduced the metabolism of mebendazole and increased mebendazole serum concentrations. The increased mebendazole concentrations may be beneficial in patients with unresponsive hydatid cyst disease. Interaction studies have not been done to determine the effects of other drugs on the pharmacokinetics of mebendazole.

Mebendazole is metabolized by hepatic cytochrome P450 enzymes and other enzymes. The specific enzymes involved in mebendazole metabolism have not been identified. Barbiturates, carbamazepine, fosphenytoin, phenytoin, and certain rifamycins (rifampin, rifapentine, rifabutin) induce hepatic microsomal enzymes and may increase the metabolism of mebendazole if given concomitantly. This effect can cause decreased levels of plasma mebendazole but is probably important only in the treatment of extraintestinal infections, such as hydatid cyst disease, and not in the treatment of intestinal helminths.
