Mebendazole (Vermox) Adverse Reactions
Abdominal pain and diarrhea can occur transiently during therapy with mebendazole. This reaction may be a response to expulsion of the worms following therapy and can be more pronounced in cases of massive helminth infestation. Other reported side effects during therapy with mebendazole include nausea/vomiting, headache, tinnitus, numbness, dizziness, alopecia, pruritus, flushing, hiccups, cough, weakness, drowsiness, chills, hypotension, increased BUN, decreased hemoglobin and hematocrit, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, eosinophilia, hematuria, and cylindruria. Angioedema, rash, seizures, and urticaria have been reported rarely.
Elevated hepatic enzymes, neutropenia, and rare reports of hepatitis have been reported after long term therapy, with higher than recommended doses. Agranulocytosis has also been reported.
