Loratadine Indications and Dosage

For the relief of symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis and for management of chronic idiopathic urticaria or other histamine-mediated allergic symptoms (e.g., hives):
Oral dosage (tablets containing loratadine 10 mg; e.g., Alavert®, Claritin® 24 hour):
Adults, adolescents, and children > = 6 years: 1 tablet PO once daily. Do not exceed 1 tablet in 24 hours.
Elderly: See adult dosage.
Children < 6 years: Safe and effective use has not been established.

Oral dosage (disintegrating tablets containing loratadine 10 mg; e.g., Alavert® disintegrating tablets, Claritin® RediTabs®, Children’s Dimetapp® ND):
Adults, adolescents, and children > = 6 years: Place 1 tablet PO on tongue and let dissolve; administer once daily. Do not exceed 1 tablet in 24 hours.
Elderly: See adult dosage.
Children < 6 years: Safe and effective use has not been established.

Oral dosage (oral syrup containing loratadine 5 mg per 5 ml; e.g., Children’s Claritin®):
Adults, adolescents, and children > = 6 years: 10 ml PO daily, not to exceed 10 ml in 24 hours.
Elderly: See adult dosage.
Children 2 - 5 years: 5 ml PO once daily, not to exceed 5 ml in 24 hours.
Children < 2 years: Safe and effective use has not been established.

Maximum Dosage Limits:


  • Adults: 10 mg/day PO.
  • Elderly: 10 mg/day PO.
  • Adolescents: 10 mg/day PO.
  • Children 6 - 12 years: 10 mg/day PO.
  • Children 2 - 5 years: 5 mg/day PO.
  • Children < 2 years: Safe and effective use has not been established.

Patients with hepatic impairment:
For adults and children >= 6 years, reduce initial dosage to 10 mg PO every other day. For children 2 - 5 years: reduce initial dose to 5 mg PO every other day.

Patients with renal impairment:
CrCl < 30 ml/min: For adults and children >= 6 years, reduce initial dosage to 10 mg PO every other day. For children 2 - 5 years: reduce initial dose to 5 mg PO every other day.

Intermittent hemodialysis:
Loratadine and its active metabolite are not removed by hemodialysis.
