Lamisil (Terbinafine) skin cream, gel, or topical solution

What is terbinafine skin cream, gel, or topical solution?
TERBINAFINE (Lamisil®) is an antifungal antibiotic used to treat skin infections caused by certain types of fungus. It is not intended for use in the eye, or for vaginal infections. Generic terbinafine skin cream, gel or solutions are not yet available.

What should my health care professional know before I use terbinafine?
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to terbinafine, dyes or preservatives
  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • breast-feeding

How should I use this medicine?
Terbinafine is for use on the skin. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Wash hands before and after use (except when treating hand or fingernail infections). Apply enough product to cover the affected skin or nail and surrounding area. Do not cover the treated area with a bandage or dressing unless directed to do so by your prescriber. Do not use your medicine more often than directed. Use your doses at regular intervals. Finish the full course prescribed by your prescriber or health care professional even if you think your condition is better. Do not stop using except on your prescriber’s advice.

Use care not to get the cream, gel, or solution in the eyes or other mucous membranes like the nose or mouth.

Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, use only that dose. Do not use double or extra doses.

What drug(s) may interact with terbinafine?
Other skin products may affect the action of terbinafine. Do not use any other skin products on the affected area without consulting your prescriber or health care professional.

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What side effects may I notice from using terbinafine?
Side effects while using terbinafine cream, gel, or topical solution are rare. Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • skin rash, itching
  • blistering, increased redness, peeling, or swelling of the skin or mouth

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

  • burning or stinging
  • dryness
  • skin irritation

What should I watch for while taking terbinafine?
Tell your prescriber or health care professional if your symptoms do not improve after 3 days. Some fungal infections can take a long time to clear completely so finish your prescribed course.

Do not get terbinafine cream, gel, or solution in your eyes, mouth, or nose; if you do, rinse with plenty of cool tap water.

After bathing, make sure that your skin is dry. Most types of fungus live in moist environments. Wear clean socks and clothing every day.

Where can I keep my medicine?
Keep out of the reach of children.

Store at room temperature between 5-30 degrees C (41-77 degrees F). Discard any unused medicine after the expiration date.
