Dicyclomine (Bentyl) Adverse Reactions
Adverse effects associated with dicyclomine are manifestations of the anticholinergic activity of the drug at the receptor site, and they are usually reversible following discontinuance of the drug.
The following adverse effects are frequently associated with the use of anticholinergic agents at both therapeutic and subtherapeutic levels: blurred vision, cycloplegia, mydriasis, photophobia, anhidrosis, xerostomia (dry mouth), urinary retention, sinus tachycardia, palpitations, and constipation. Saliva substitutes may be administered to relieve dry mouth.
Additional adverse effects associated with dicyclomine administration include increased ocular tension, dysgeusia, dysphagia, headache, nervousness, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, impotence (erectile dysfunction), flushing, insomnia, nausea/vomiting, anaphylaxis, urticaria, and a bloated feeling.
