Comments:
Description: Crotamiton is a topical scabicide. It is used for the treatment and eradication of scabies and symptomatic treatment of pruritic skin. This drug was approved by the FDA in 1949.
Mechanism of Action: The scabicidal and antipruritic mechanisms of action of crotamiton are unknown.
Contraindications and Precautions: Do not apply to inflamed skin or raw or weeping skin surfaces until acute inflammation has subsided. If severe irritation or sensitization develops, discontinue therapy.
Breast-feeding: It is not known if crotamiton is excreted in human breast milk. There are no documented problems in humans.
Children: Safe and effective use has not been established.
Pregnancy: FDA pregnancy risk category C. It is not known if crotamiton can cause fetal harm when applied topically to a pregnant woman or can affect reproduction capacity. No studies have been done in humans. Use only during pregnancy if clearly needed.
Drug Interactions: No significant interactions.

Adverse Reactions: Allergic sensitivity or primary irritation reactions.
Available As:
Eurax® cream or lotion crotamiton 10%. Contains cetyl alcohol.
Dosage:
For the treatment of scabies caused by Sarcoptes scabiei:
Topical dosage:
Adults: After routine bath, a 10% preparation is applied to the skin over the entire body from the chin to the toes. Thoroughly massage into the skin paying particular attention to folds and creases. Repeat in 24 hours. Clothing and bed linen should be changed the next day. Contaminated clothing and bed linen may be dry-cleaned or washed in the hot cycle of the washing machine. Patient may take a cleansing bath 48 hours after second dose. May repeat in 7 - 10 days if new lesions appear.
For symptomatic treatment of pruritus:
Topical dosage:
Adults: Apply 10% preparation to the affected skin. Massage gently into skin until completely absorbed. Repeat as needed.
