Ciclopirox shampoo

What is ciclopirox shampoo?
CICLOPIROX (Loprox® Shampoo) is a shampoo used to treat seborrhea (a dandruff like condition) of the scalp and hair. Generic ciclopirox shampoo is not available.

What should my health care professional know before I use ciclopirox shampoo?
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:


  • diabetes mellitus
  • herpes infection
  • HIV infection
  • persistent fungal infections of the skin
  • an unusual or allergic reaction to ciclopirox, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • breast-feeding

How should I use this medicine?
Ciclopirox shampoo is for use on the hair and scalp only; do not take by mouth or get this shampoo into your eyes. Follow the directions on the prescription label exactly. Wet hair and apply the amount prescribed to the scalp. Lather and leave on the hair and scalp for 3 minutes, then rinse. You will repeat the treatment twice per week (with 3 days between treatments) for 4 weeks. Use the shampoo for the full treatment time even though your symptoms may have improved. Notify your prescriber or health care professional if there is no improvement after 4 weeks. Do not use your medicine more often than directed. Do not use this medicine for any condition other than the one for which it was prescribed.

Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, use only that dose and return to your treatment schedule. Do not use double or extra doses.

What drug(s) may interact with use ciclopirox shampoo?
Other scalp and hair products may affect the action of ciclopirox. Tell your prescriber or health care professional about other products you are using. Do not apply ciclopirox shampoo at the same time as other medicated shampoos without the advice of your prescriber.

What side effects may I notice from using use ciclopirox shampoo?
Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:


  • condition gets worse
  • redness, severe itching, burning, blistering, or oozing of the skin
  • skin rash
  • swelling of the skin

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):


  • mild itching

What should I watch for while taking use ciclopirox shampoo?
Tell your prescriber or health care professional if your symptoms do not improve within 4 weeks. It is important not to use more ciclopirox shampoo than prescribed. If you have a reaction (examples: redness, itching, burning, blistering, swelling, or oozing) to the shampoo that suggests you are sensitive to it, discontinue use of the shampoo and contact your prescriber.

Do not get this shampoo in your eyes. If you do, rinse out with plenty of cool tap water.

Where can I keep my medicine?
Keep out of the reach of children.

Store the shampoo at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C); do not freeze. Once opened, the shampoo may be used for up to 8 weeks. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
