Bupropion: Administration
Oral Administration
- May administer with food, if needed.
- To avoid or limit the risk of insomnia, do not administer doses at bedtime.
- Given that there are multiple dosage forms of bupropion available, it is important to be familiar with each product’s name and dosing schedule to avoid dosing errors.
- Sustained-released or extended-release tablets: Swallow whole, do not crush or chew. Crushing or chewing destroys the extended-release mechanism. Dividing the tablets is not generally recommended. In limited cases, the Wellbutrin® SR tablets may be cut in half once to ease administration, however, this should be done just prior to administration due to rapid drug degradation upon exposure to air and moisture.[*] Wellbutrin® XL tablets should not be split. If multiple doses are administered daily with SR formulation, each dose should be given at least 8 hours apart to limit the risk of seizures. The XL formulation is given once-daily, preferably in the morning.
