Amitriptyline Administration
NOTE: There is no known pharmacologic benefit to multiple daily doses after steady state has been achieved. Plasma concentrations should be monitored in patients that have an inadequate response or excessive adverse effects. The therapeutic serum concentration range for amitriptyline is 100 - 250 ng/ml (parent drug plus the active metabolite).
Oral Administration
- May administer without regard to meals.
- Administration of entire daily dose at bedtime may increase compliance and reduce daytime sedation. In the minority of patients that experience stimulation and insomnia with bedtime dosing, the dose should be given in the morning.
Intramuscular Administration [NOTE: Elavil® injection has been discontinued from manufacture (May 2003)]
- Do not administer intravenously.
- Use IM only if patient is unable or unwilling to take oral treatment. Oral therapy should replace IM therapy as soon as possible.
- No dilution necessary.
- Visually inspect parenteral products for particulate matter and discoloration prior to administration whenever solution and container permit.
- Inject deeply into a large muscle mass. Aspirate prior to injection to avoid injection into a blood vessel.
