Alprazolam (Xanax) Administration
Oral Administration
- Immediate-release dosage forms: Xanax® tablets or oral solution may be administered without regard to meals.
- Orally disintegrating tablets: Do not remove Niravam™ tablets from the bottle until just prior to administration. With dry hands, open the bottle, remove the tablet, and immediately place on the tongue to dissolve and be swallowed. The tablet may be taken with water, but water is not required. Discard cotton; reseal the bottle tightly.
- Extended-release tablets: Xanax® XR tablets should not be chewed, broken or crushed; they should be swallowed whole with a drink of water. Extended-release tablets should be taken preferably in the morning. The manufacturer does not provide recommendations for the preferred timing of drug administration in regard to meals. Food does not affect the AUC or half-life of alprazolam; however, the Cmax for alprazolam is increased by about 25% when Xanax® XR tablets are taken with a high-fat meal.
