Allopurinol Administration
Oral Administration
- Allopurinol (Zyloprim) is administered after meals and with plenty of fluids.
- Maintain urine output of at least 2 L/day.
- An extemporaneous oral suspension may be prepared by crushing 2400 mg allopurinol and levigate with glycerin or distilled water. Add 40 ml methylcellulose (Cologel®); then add enough 2:1 simple syrup/cherry syrup mixture to obtain a total volume of 120 ml. The final concentration will be 20 mg/ml. Store in the refrigerator and shake well prior to use. The suspension is stable for 8 weeks.
Intravenous Administraton
- Allopurinol (Zyloprim) is administered intravenously. Do not inject intramuscularly.
- Maintain urine output of at least 2 L/day.
Reconstitution:
- Reconstitute vial with 25 ml Sterile Water for Injection.
- Further dilute with NS or D5W to a final concentration of <= 6 mg/ml. Avoid sodium bicarbonate-containing solutions.
- The reconstituted vial and infusion solutions should be stored at room temperature and should be used within 10 hours. Do not refrigerate.
- Visually inspect parenteral products for particulate matter and discoloration prior to administration whenever solution and container permit. Do not use if discoloration or particulate matter present.
Intermittent IV infusion:
- Infuse over 30-60 minutes depending upon the volume of infusate.
