What are Fexofenadine; Pseudoephedrine tablets?
FEXOFENADINE; PSEUDOEPHEDRINE (Allegra-D®, Allegra-D® 24-Hour) is an antihistamine and decongestant. It relieves the symptoms of hay fever (seasonal rhinitis) including nasal and sinus congestion. A generic tablet is not yet available.
What should my health care professional know before I take Fexofenadine; Pseudoephedrine?
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
- blood vessel disease
- difficulty urinating (urinary retention)
- heart disease
- diabetes
- glaucoma
- high blood pressure
- kidney disease
- prostate trouble
- thyroid problems (over active thyroid)
- an unusual or allergic reaction to fexofenadine, terfenadine, pseudoephedrine, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
- pregnant or trying to get pregnant
- breast-feeding
How should I take this medicine?
Take fexofenadine; pseudoephedrine tablets by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Take the tablet on an empty stomach, one hour before a meal. Do not break, crush, or chew the tablets. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.
Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.
Older patients (> 60 years old) may have a stronger reaction to this medicine.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
What drug(s) may interact with Fexofenadine; Pseudoephedrine?
- alcohol or cocaine
- antacids
- caffeine
- barbiturate medicines for inducing sleep or treating seizures (convulsions)
- erythromycin
- furazolidone
- grapefruit, apple, or orange juice
- ketoconazole
- linezolid
- medicines known as MAO inhibitors, such as phenelzine (Nardil®), tranylcypromine (Parnate®), isocarboxazid (Marplan®), and selegiline (Carbex®, Eldepryl®)
- mecamylamine
- medicines for anxiety or sleeping problems, such as alprazolam, diazepam, or temazepam
- medicines for colds and breathing difficulties
- medicines for hay fever and other allergies such as antihistamines
- medicines for heart disease such as digoxin or beta-blockers
- medicines for mental depression (antidepressants)
- medicines for mental problems, anxieties and psychotic disturbances
- medicines for migraine headaches such as ergot alkaloids
- medicines for nasal congestion such as pseudoephedrine
- medicines for pain such as opiate analgesics (e.g. codeine)
- methyldopa
- procarbazine
- reserpine
- rifampin
- sodium bicarbonate, sodium acetate, sodium citrate, or sodium lactate
- St. John’s Wort
Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.
What side effects may I notice from taking Fexofenadine; Pseudoephedrine?
Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
- abdominal pain or rectal bleeding
- chest pain
- confusion
- convulsions (seizures)
- difficulty breathing or wheezing
- difficulty urinating
- dizziness or fainting spells
- fast or irregular heartbeat, palpitations
- high blood pressure
- numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
- rash
- severe, persistent, or worsening headache
- tremor or muscle contractions
- visual changes
- vomiting
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
- dry mouth
- headache (mild)
- loss of appetite or nausea
- nervousness or difficulty sleeping
- throat irritation
- tiredness or drowsiness
What should I watch for while taking Fexofenadine; Pseudoephedrine?
Tell your prescriber or health care professional if your symptoms do not improve in 1 to 2 days or if you have a high fever.
You may get drowsy or dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how this drug affects you. To reduce the risk of dizzy or fainting spells, do not stand or sit up quickly, especially if you are an older patient. Alcohol may increase dizziness and drowsiness. Avoid alcoholic drinks.
Your mouth may get dry. Chewing sugarless gum or sucking hard candy, and drinking plenty of water will help.
This medicine may make it difficult for some people to sleep at night. If nervousness, dizziness, or sleeplessness occur, consult a health care professional to discuss your medications.
If you are going to have surgery, tell your prescriber you are taking Fexofenadine; Pseudoephedrine.
Where can I keep my medicine?
Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.
Store at room temperature or between 20 and 25 degrees C (68 and 77 degrees F). Protect from moisture. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
