Alendronate Monitoring Parameters

    Alendronate Administration

    Oral Administration


    • Tablets: Administer in the morning with a full glass of plain water (180 - 240 ml or 6 - 8 oz) at least 30 minutes before the first food, beverage, or medication. At least 30 minutes should elapse after an alendronate dose before taking any other drugs.
    • Oral Solution: Use oral syringe or other calibrated device for accurate dosage. Administer in the morning with at least 60 ml (2 oz) of water, at least 30 minutes before the first food, beverage, or medication. At least 30 minutes should elapse after an alendronate dose before taking any other drugs.
    • To avoid esophageal irritation, do not lie down for at least 30 minutes post dose. Alendronate should not be taken at bedtime or before arising.

    Intravenous Administration (Intravenous product not available in the US) :


    • Dilute dose in 250 ml or 500 ml NS.
    • Visually inspect parenteral products for particulate matter and discoloration prior to administration whenever solution and container permit.
    • An IV infusion time of 2 - 6 hours has been recommended.
