VERMOX

Ingredients
Each VERMOX tablet contains:

• 100 mg of mebendazole as the active ingredient.
• Cellulose - microcrystalline, sodium starch glycollate, talc-purified, starch-maize, saccharin-sodium, cottonseed oil - hydrogenated, magnesium stearate, orange flavour, silica - colloidal anhydrous, sodium lauryl sulphate and sunset yellow SCF (orange yellow S (E110)),.

Each 5mL of VERMOX suspensions contains:

• 100 mg of mebendazole as the active ingredient.
• Cellulose - microcrystalline, carmellose sodium (carboxymethylcellulose sodium), methylcellulose, sucrose, sodium lauryl sulphate, methyl hydroxybenzoate, propyl hydroxybenzoate, banana flavour 51452t, citric acid monohydrate and water-purified.

Indications and Usage for Mebendazole

Mebendazole tablets are indicated for the treatment of Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm), Trichuris trichiura (whipworm), Ascaris lumbricoides (common roundworm), Ancylostoma duodenale (common hookworm), Necator americanus (American hookworm) in single or mixed infections.

Efficacy varies as a function of such factors as preexisting diarrhea and gastrointestinal transit time, degree of infection, and helminth strains.

When you must not take it
Do not take VERMOX if you know you are allergic to it or any other medicines containing mebendazole or similar medicines or any of the ingredients listed at the end of the leaflet.

Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include:

rash, itching or hives on the skin
shortness of breath, wheezing or difficulty breathing
swelling of the face, lips, tongue or other parts of the body

Taking other medicines
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including medicines that you buy without a prescription from a pharmacy, supermarket or health food shop. Some medicines may interfere with VERMOX.
These include:
- cimetidine, a medicine used to treat stomach ulcers;
- metronidazole, a medicine used to treat infections.

These medicines may be affected by VERMOX, or may affect how well it works. You may need different amounts of your medicine, or you may need to take different medicines. Your doctor will advise you.

Vermox Side Effects

General
Since mebendazole is not well absorbed, few systemic side effects are reported. Side effects may be more likely and more severe in patients with underlying liver disease.

Gastrointestinal
Gastrointestinal side effects have included nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, especially when the intestinal parasite burden is great.

Hepatic
Increased liver function tests have been associated with mebendazole in patients with hepatic hydatid cysts.

Hepatic side effects have included transient changes in liver function tests and granulomatous hepatitis. These side effects have been reported when mebendazole was taken for prolonged periods and at dosages substantially above those recommended.

Hematologic
Bone marrow biopsy results during mebendazole-associated leukopenia or pancytopenia have revealed hypocellularity. These effects reverse upon drug discontinuation.

Hematologic side effects are unusual and reversible, but may be severe. Profound leukopenia, often accompanied by anemia and thrombocytopenia, has been reported. Pancytopenia and neutropenia have also been reported.

Dermatologic
Dermatologic side effects have included rare reports of alopecia and angioedema. Rash, pruritus, urticaria, and flushing have also been reported.

Other
No evidence of hypersensitivity (eosinophilia, rash, leukocytosis) accompanied the rare reports of drug fever. The fever may have been idiosyncratic or evidence of a reaction to drug-induced tissue necrosis in hydatid cysts.

Other side effects have included chills and drug fever.

Nervous system
Nervous system side effects have been reported rarely. These have included weakness, drowsiness, and seizures.
