Carisoprodol is indicated as an adjunct to rest, physical therapy, and other measures for the relief of discomfort associated with acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions.

'SOMA' (carisoprodol) Tablets, USP is available as 350 mg round, white tablets.

Chemically, carisoprodol is N-isopropyl-2-methyl-2-propyl-1,3-propanediol dicarbamate.

Carisoprodol is a white, crystalline powder, having a mild, characteristic odor and a bitter taste. It is very slightly soluble in water; freely soluble in alcohol, in chloroform, and in acetone; its solubility is practically independent of pH. Carisoprodol is present as a racemic mixture.

Side Effects

When treating muscle spasms with Soma® (carisoprodol), there is only one standard dosage, regardless of your age or weight. The recommended starting dosage of Soma is one tablet (of either strength, 250 mg Soma tablets or 350 mg Soma tablets) three times a day and at bedtime.

Soma is intended to be used for a maximum of two to three weeks at a time. This should be enough time to allow any muscle injury or damage to heal. If you feel that the problem has not improved after two or three weeks, check with your healthcare provider. You may have an ongoing problem that needs to be treated differently.

For the medication to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed; do not adjust your dose without your healthcare provider's approval. Soma can cause significant drowsiness. Your healthcare provider may recommend that you take Soma only at night, especially if you need to be alert during the day.
